Radon Measurement and Mitigation
Radon is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless naturally occurring gas that is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States with over 20,000 deaths a year. The State of Kentucky alone has 30 counties listed in EPA's "Red" or "Zone 1" (i.e., counties that have the 'Highest Potential' with a predicted average indoor radon screening level greater than 4 pCi/L (picocuries per liter). 82 counties in Kentucky listed in EPA's "Orange" or "Zone 2" (i.e., counties
that have 'Moderate Potential' with a predicted average indoor radon
screening level between 2-4 pCi/L (picocuries per liter). Only 8 counties in Kentucky are listed in EPA's "Yellow" or "Zone 3" (i.e., counties
that have a 'Low Potential' with a predicted average indoor radon
screening level less than 2 pCi/L (picocuries per liter). Most of South Central Kentucky is listed in "Red" or "Zone 1" having the 'Highest Potential' for radon levels above 4 pCi/L.
